How to tackle the graduate employment market?

Gaining success in the competitive graduate employment market always seems impossible for most new graduates. Here are three steps you can take to help you tackle this process.

1. Think out of the box about where you might add value

Your career trajectory may not always be limited to the professions that only relate to your major in the university. For instance, an Acquisition Specialist at a Big Four firm points out that, science graduates are also strong candidates for management consulting roles for their great logical mindset.

2. Careful preparation for every interview

Remember to conduct a thorough research about the company and the industry before coming to the interview, which is especially crucial when you receive an initial call from the recruiter. When it comes to a face-to-face interview, try to articulate the value you could offer the company instead of simply listing your significant achievements, which might be unattractive sometimes.

3. Anticipate problems and demonstrate that you are proactive

The graduate recruitment process can be long, and, normally, an interview may clash with your schedule. You can consider emailing the recruiter to request a reschedule of the interview. This action could be highly appreciated by the recruiters, as you demonstrate your ability to anticipate problems and how you would manage them.

How To Make Sure You Wonโ€™t Regret When Switching Jobs

Switching jobs are common, and yet, sometimes you feel regret after taking a new job. Here are some suggestions you can take to avoid a painful career misstep:

Career decisions are complex, and the structure of your decision is crucial. Try to outline your tailored career goals and criteria for acceptance, laying out a roadmap for how you will assess each element before you make your decision.

Please keep in mind that not every promise thatโ€™s made during an interview will be fulfilled. It is helpful to raise questions regarding employee engagement, growth potential, expectations, etc. Asking exploratory questions can help you avoid being led astray in the interview.

Cognitive bias is the tendency to favour information that you already have faith in. Beware of it as you are trying to make a life-altering decision!

Discussing your decision-making criteria with people you know that will challenge your points is always helpful. On the other hand, why not network with people who already work there so that you will know precisely whether a companyโ€™s values align with yours.

Here are a few suggestions:
ย Determine the time and purpose of the meeting.
ย Set an agenda.
ย Limit the meeting time and focus on set topics.
ย Keep people involved.

In Dare to Lead, Brene Brown also mentions how everyone goes over the meeting minutes together at the end of every meeting to ensure that all participants have a clear understanding and that the minute taker wouldnโ€™t rely on his/her memory to write meeting minutes after the meeting.

5 Steps to Tackle Procrastination

To become a good leader requires you to cultivate yourself first, since your subordinates will look up to you as their role model. If you expect them to work efficiently, it is crucial that you overcome your own procrastination. Here are five scientific-based steps that you might find helpful when you find yourself procrastinating on a task:

Ask yourself: โ€œIs the task important to you? If the answer is yes, you have to be determinate to work on it immediately. If it feels daunting and you do not know where to start, creating a list of tasks is a good stepping stone.

Oftentimes, we get overwhelmed by setting unrealistic targets (For example: Finish 10 tasks in 1 hour), and end up not being able to finish them. Hence, it is important to understand our limit and create a list with a reasonable amount of tasks that can be done within a timeframe.

Choose an easy task to โ€œwarm upโ€ will help create a momentum, which carries you through other difficult tasks. For example: If you are procrastinated to do a big report, start with collecting all resources that you might need into a folder first.
* Small tip: Pick a song that normally gets you excited to listen to while doing the first task. This is a quick boost for your brain to get into working mode

Science has discovered that our brain naturally goes through cycles with peaks and valleys, therefore, it is important to balance between focused time with relaxation. In general, this Pomodoro technique requires you to put away all distractions and working in concentrated chunks of time (25 minutes work), followed by short periods of rest (5 minutes) after each chunk. After three to four chunks, take a long rest for 20 to 30 minutes. This technique allows you to harness the optimal performance of the brain and body under time pressure.

Another way to motivate yourself to complete a task is to create a reward that you will give yourself once itโ€™s been completed. What can you treat yourself to once youโ€™ve finished this task? Research shows the human brain responds to reward stimulus and this can be a good way to create the habit of getting things done.
